I don’t know about you but I love a good musical. A few months ago I was lucky enough to attend Wicked the Musical at the Mayflower.
For a musical theatre geek, Jersey Boys has always completely flew under my radar. Not necessarily at the top of my theatre bucket list but something I’d love to see regardless. So when The Mayflower invited me and a few of the gals from Southampton Bloggers I was more than keen to have a look!
For those who don’t know, the plot is about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and how they came to be. All the trials and tribulations they went through in order to receive recognition and the aspects of their personal life through it all, and how in the end they were just like a family.
The stars in the current Southampton production part of the tour are Michael Watson as Frankie Valli, Simon Bailey as Tommy Devito, Declan Egan as Bob Gaudio and Lewis Griffiths as Nick Massi.
It took my ears a short while to tune in to the New Jersey/Italian accents when the musical started but as soon as I did I was captivated. Songs I knew but didn’t know originally came from the Four Seasons I bopped along to and the audience atmosphere was captivating. I felt like I was shipped into a time machine and was a teenager in the 1960’s!
Huge props to Michael Watson who played Frankie Valli, his voice hit some seriously impressive high notes throughout the musical with such control and power – we were all entwined with his spell.
The harmonies of all 4 were amazing, and the acting and dancing that went along with it was incredible.
The whole audience participated in clapping and bopping along to most of the songs and the whole evening was outstanding. I don’t know why this musical wasn’t on my radar in the first place, and I would 100% book to go back.
Jersey Boys the UK tour is playing at the Mayflower until 30th March so book tickets now!
